Director Tod Browning‘s Freaks (now hailed as a masterpiece) freaked out audiences in 1932 so much it ended his career.
He had just made Dracula (the 1931 version with Bela Lugosi) and was given carte blanche to make a film depicting the human side of the “human curiosities” he knew from his own youth.
